We would like to inform our clients that claims are now open for a class action settlement related to unauthorized access to certain Government of Canada online accounts in 2020, including CRA My Account, My Service Canada Account and other accounts accessed using GCKey.
If you received a notice by email or mail from KPMG regarding this settlement, you may be eligible to apply for compensation. Individuals who did not receive a notice but believe they may have been affected can also confirm their eligibility directly through the settlement administrator’s website.
Depending on their circumstances and subject to the settlement terms, eligible claimants may qualify for:
- Up to $80 where personal information was accessed without evidence of fraudulent use;
- Up to $200 where personal information was accessed and used for certain fraudulent purposes, such as fraudulent CERB, CESB or EI applications; and
- Up to $5,000 for certain eligible out-of-pocket expenses related to the breach.
Claims must be submitted directly to the settlement administrator by February 3, 2027. Individuals who believe they may be affected should review the Government of Canada settlement notice and contact the settlement administrator directly with any questions regarding their eligibility or claim.
Clients should also remain vigilant for potential scams and verify that any communications regarding the settlement or or claiming to be from the CRA are from legitimate sources.
