Dispositions of a Principal Residence

It has been a long standing practice that the sale of one’s principal residence was not a reportable transaction on one’s personal income tax return. On October 3, 2016, Finance Minister Morneau introduced new tax rules concerning the sale of a principal residence and the related principal residence exemption (“PRE”) which impact all Canadian individuals.


Tax Rule Changing on Life Insurance Policies

On December 31st, 2016, the Federal Government will implement tax rule changes on Life Insurance policies, the first major legislative changes affecting life insurance policies since 1982. Higher insurance costs will result, along with restrictions on the amounts that one can deposit into the investment feature within permanent life insurance such as Universal Life contracts. Policies issued prior to January 1, 2017 will be grandfathered and unaffected by these tax rule changes.


New Changes for U.S. Individual ITIN Renewals

If you are an individual that is not a U.S. citizen or U.S. green card holder (permanent resident) and are not an employee of a United States employer but have the need to file a tax return with the United States, you likely have an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). Starting October 1, 2016, the IRS is implementing a program where every ITIN issued will expire at a specified date unless the holder of the ITIN undergoes a renewal process.
